DAHAB

Welcome to Dahab

Dahab is located on the east side of the Sinai Peninsula, directly on the Gulf of Aqaba, about mid-way between Sharm-el-Sheikh in the south and Taba in the north.
The distance of about 100 km from Sharm to Dahab is easily done with a car.
The street is in good condition, free of pot-holes and leads through impressive and colourful mountains to a pass that is situated about 650m above sea level. From here it is only 30 km until you reach Dahab.

Medinah Bay

The translation of the arabic word “Dahab“ means “gold“. To explain this name you have the choice between different legends, but the most probable and literally enlighting explanation you can witness yourself every day, when the sun sets behind the mountains in the most beautiful colours, which leave a golden glance on the surface of the Red Sea.

Promenade

Originally, Dahab was an oasis in the past, which was frequented by the local Bedouin. Nowadays it is a prospering place the size of a village, where the past collides with the present, yet seemingly melting.

Spices

Although most of the shops are run by Egyptians, the Bedouin have integrated themselves into the local business life in a decent way.
Cell phones have become a standard, however, between sunrise and sunset there is no reason to be in a hurry, the daily life is very calm.
And apparently this aspect is responsible for the attraction of this location.

Shishas

The western world is so fast, that the term deceleration, before it could be realized, seems to be obsolete.
In Dahab, the traveller can enjoy idle pleasures in a variety of ways. You can lay down on the beach, enjoy the view, go for a swim or for a walk, read a book, or even better: go diving!

DIVING IN DAHAB

Dahab - Mashraba

Diving in Dahab has become a tradition. The coral reefs along the coastline with their natural and comfortable entry and exit areas are inviting to extended explorations of the underwater world. In the Gulf of Aqaba there is no current worth mentioning, and you dive along the coastline on any of the about 30 dive sites that are accessible within half an hour with a jeep.

Promenade & Diving

For many people, scuba diving is one of the most enjoyable recreational activities. The diving conditions in Dahab are attractive for both beginners an experienced divers.
Depending on the level of education and experience, you can explore different depth ranges. There is always something to see, and the coral reefs grow from about 40-50m depth all the way up to the surface, sometimes in steps, sometimes on steep and rather vertical walls.

Blue Hole

Some dive sites are attractive in a very unique way, because they have walls that fall down to unfathomable depths. At first they seem to deep to be explored, but this impression is not necessarily true.
The depths are very close or beyond the 40m range, so there would be not enough time left, when you have to apply no-decompression time limits.

Scuba diving can be divided into two different approaches, recreational diving and technical diving. Recreational diving enables every individual, with one tank filled with breathing gas, to spend a certain amount of time under water, until you have to surface. Either the gas supply determines when you have to surface, or the frame for the defined maximum allowable time does. If you would like to extend these frame conditions, there is one reasonable alternative that contributes to minimizing the risk:

More than 15 years ago, the term “technical diving“ appeared, which is different from recreational diving, because it focuses on some aspects which are usually neglected in recreational diving. The diver needs to plan and prepare all predictable aspects and situations of a dive, because the depth and time limitations of a recreational dive might be exceeded. With an elevated potential risk, you simply need to have a more cautious and detailed approach. Each and every time you alter the dive objective, you need to adapt to this situation accordingly. This also means additional dive equipment that needs to be carried, but also the necessary self-confidence and safety that comes with training and experience, in fulfilling more demanding tasks under water. With extending frame conditions of a dive, you need extended knowledge and skill, which is something you can learn to deal with. Regardless of the fact, how you take part in diving activities, top of the priority list is the diver’s safety, which starts with a solid education.

DIVING INSTRUCTION

Toni

A solid education starts with a beginner course that teaches the first Stepps to be taken. Dive theory and practice are equally important, because they add to each other. To make sure you have an optimum of quality during your education, you should contact a dive center, or diving school with a good reputation, with experienced and professional personnel.

It is highly recommended to learn and dive in small groups of maximum six persons, because all participants need to be taken care of individually, to meet everyone’s learning pace.

Diving itself is a sensual experience that stimulates all senses and all levels of the human conscience, so every person needs to have the opportunity from the very start, to get a feeling for their own pace.

Water has its own rules, and we as humans have to learn how to adapt to these rules. As opposed to all marine life, we are not able anymore to live and breathe under water. Our organism has adapted to the life conditions on the planet’s surface, and we need to learn how to use some technical tools which enable us to breathe under water for a limited amount of time.
